Two cellulosic polymers (EHEC and CMC) have been evaluated in pilot coating trials with respect to their function as cobinder in two different coating formulations; one calcium carbonate-based glossy offset formulation and one clay-based light-weight-coated (LWC) formulation. For each grade the coating formulation was thus varied only by variation of the cobinder.

It was found, especially in the LWC formulation, that EHEC interacted strongly with the binder and reduced the amount of binder in the surface. Depending on the choice of cobinder, significant differences in wetting properties, gloss and print gloss were found. Despite the clear dependence of the coated surface properties on the type of co-binder used, only small differences were detected in the developed microstructure, as measured by Hg-porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy.
