Evaluation of Infrared Dryer Performance for Papermakers, 1999 Coating Conference Proceedings

InfraRed (IR) Drying experiences are held amongst a small group of experts in the industry. For the papermaker, these experiences are mostly qualitative. Despite the many possible detailed discussions (emissivity, wavelengths, surface temperature), the key objective is to understanding “How much useful heat will be passed to the paper?” This technical paper brings forth recent experiences in evaluating an operating IR Drying system in Austria using simple thermodynamic calculations. In addition, an identification of various energies are discussed so direct “apples to apples” comparison can be applied when reviewing different IR Drying proposals.
