This session is intended to focus on the current state of hot soft-nip calendering, Dr. Benno Bader will lead off the session by presenting work entitled “Demands on Elastic Calender Cover Design Related to Paper Quality in Softnip and Supercalendering,” during which he will present a brief historical introduction to materials used for calender cover applications. He will also discuss the relationship between cover surface topography and the paper produced, the improved marking and crack resistance of fiber reinforced covers, and better CD gloss profile via optimized filler particle size and distribution.

Following the paper, panelists will summarize state-of-the-art capabilities in the areas of roll cover performance, measurement and control systems, and latex coating formulation effects. Dialogue between the panel and the audience in the form of comments, questions, and answers is expected to produce a lively interchange of information.
