The topic of air in coating colors is of high interest for the paper coating industry, particularly for high speed machines. The rapidly advancing technology of Free Jet coating cannot be utilized efficiently without deaeration. Significant quality improvements can be achieved on basically all different application technologies at speeds above 1000 m/min by using deaeration.
The reasons for air entrainment in coating colors are manifold and the relative importance of the different influences is complex. These parameters that affect the level of air in coating formulations, methods to quantify and qualify this amount and ways to reduce it are discussed. Mechanical deaeration with cyclone deaerators is currently becoming the common method to remove air. These deaerators match the expectations of the paper coatings industry. Only for specialty applications is a higher degree of deaeration needed.
