The use of narrow particle size distribution kaolins and calcium carbonates opens up new possibilities as well as challenges for the coating formulator. Using the right combination of narrow distribution pigments can provide significant value to the paper producer. In fact these new pigments can allow the coating structure to be
manipulated to a larger degree than was ever thought possible. However, mismatch of these narrow distribution pigments can lead to less than desirable results in the final coating. Work presented shows how to use narrow particle size pigments to actually tune the pore size of the coating to a target value. Pilot coating as well as commercial mill trials are presented that demonstrate matching pigments can lead to significant enhancement of the optical and printing performance of the coating.
