Coated paper production and coating technologies in Japan are reviewed. Woodfree coated and wood-containing coated papers are produced. A variety of coating materials are applied with blade coaters or metered size presses (mainly transfer roll size press). Modern jet fountain applicators are used for both off and on machine coaters to optimize the runnability and the coated paper qualities. Hot soft-nip calenders are used for the production of wood-containing grades as well as woodfree grades. Kaolin clay is imported from the USA, Brazil, and Australia, while calcium carbonate is domestically produced. Recent developments in latex technology is remarkable for increased coating / latex stability, targeting high speed coating. Urea phosphate starch is the most prevalent coating grade starch. Imported low viscosity hydroxyethyl starch is used, also.
