This paper discusses the retrofit of two on-machine short dwell (SD) coaters with flow stabilizing wedges. The rebuilds are reviewed from start to finish including pilot studies, start-ups, and process analysis. The function of the flow stabilizing wedge is to reduce the random coating deficiency streaks evident with conventional SD coaters. Computer simulation shows the improved stability of coating flow in the pond and Tapio analysis supports the significant reduction in random streaks. An analysis of production process and quality data are presented. The rebuilt SD coaters have shown both improved runnability and improved LWC paper quality. In addition, the rebuilds eliminated the need for two major coater rebuilds which would have been considerably more expensive and time consuming.
