Diffusion Model for Predicting Coated Paper Scattering, 2002 Coating Conference Proceedings

Mujat--Linking key paper coating properties such as gloss, opacity, and brightness to fundamental physical characteristics of the coating has been explored extensively over the last 20 years. Studies in this area have led to a greater understanding of the role of pore size, pore volume, and/or particle size distribution of the coating components in producing desired end use properties. Yet the physical measurements made on the coating are not directly linked to the observed performance in terms of light scattering. In this paper we present an optical technique and model that can be used to probe the structure and scattering performance of a coating simultaneously. We will demonstrate that with optical techniques we can probe the pore size and volume of a coating non-destructively. We also demonstrate how the technique correlates this with the physical method previously used on the same coatings. Using such a method will enable data to be collected more rapidly on coating structure and bring predictive knowledge to the coating formulator.
