Use of the Pilot Coater for Product Development, 2002 Coating Conference Proceedings

H. Simmerson and M. Parmentier

Product development usually begins with an industry demand. Once a demand has been identified, ideas to meet the demand are explored through the processes of bench synthesis of samples, preliminary screening, pilot scale synthesis, CLC screening, pilot coater runs, print trials, and finally, commercialization of the product. This process can take several years to complete before bringing a worthy candidate to the market. Proceeding through this orderly sequence of events, the "proof of the pudding" is generally the pilot coater runs and subsequent print trials. These final steps enable the supplier to completely know, and understand, the capabilities of the new product. The process also generates much data for presentation to mill technical personnel.
