Laboratory Roll Coating Device as an Experimental Tool, 2002 Coating Conference Proceedings

J. Poranen and D. W. Bousfield

A laboratory-scale roll coating device was developed and used to study film transfer process in roll coating. Experimental techniques were developed to obtain accurate information about film thickness on the steel roll surface and the actual gap between the rolls in presence of deformable roll cover, base paper, and fluid in the nip. The device is unique from past work in that this actual gap is measured. Techniques to deal with the run-out are described. The amount of fluid transferred into the base paper and the film-transfer ratio depends on the initial wet film thickness. With the fluids and base papers used, the film-transfer ratio did not strongly depend on the absorption properties of the paper. Experimental results were compared to basic theory of flow in porous media and a reasonable correlation was found.
