Raman Microspectroscopy in the Lateral Mapping of Paper Coating Composition, 2002 Coating Conference Proceedings

Raman microspectroscopy was applied to lateral mapping of offset printed paper. Raman spectroscopy can be used to measure coating component distributions, e.g. SB-latex and CaCO3 can be well detected. Paper coatings can be measured without any pretreatment and it is possible to measure coating composition even below some inks. Measurement is automated and areas of 8x8 mm can be measured in less than four hours. Factors that have influence on Raman intensity are experimentally evaluated (focus position, coating thickness, light scattering and measurement trough ink). These results show that semi-quantitative relative distributions of SB-latex - CaCO3 can be obtained through ink. Furthermore, this work provides evidence that variations in coating opacity can be seen in Raman maps.
