My TAPPI Story: Prakash Malla
TAPPISAFE

A novel, patented technology is described for producing a glossy, micro-porous, water-resistant top coating for photographic-quality ink-jet papers. The technology is based on a hybrid system that combines a specific colloidal silica with a blend of polymer emulsions. By careful selection of the chemistries of the emulsions and combining them with a specific silica in a prescribed ratio, the pore size can be controlled to give a uniform micro-porous coating layer. By keeping the pore size small, the top coat remains glossy, and yet it rapidly takes up the ink allowing a high-quality image to be trapped in the matte layer underneath. The theory behind the technology is described and examples given showing that a water-resistant, photographic-quality ink-jet paper can be produced using this new emulsion polymer/colloidal silica hybrid system.
