My TAPPI Story: McKenna Goulette
In this paper we present the influential parameters on the expansion of decor paper. We start with the raw materials for decor papers. In particular we look at fibers and their wet expansion behavior – individually as well as in different possible fiber assemblies. Next we discuss the effects of refining in regards to paper wet expansion. Then we focus on the influence of the paper machine on the wet expansion. We consider the processes in the wet part of a paper machine (namely head box and wire section), as well as in the wet press and drying section. Then we look at the next processing step of decor paper - decor printing - and evaluate its potential influence on the wet expansion of the printed decor paper. Finally we examine the treating process and its contribution to expansion. At the end we show wet expansion profiles of various decor papers and discuss the practical impacts.
