Infrared Measurement of Coextruded Film, 1993 International European Extrusion Coating Symposium Proceedings

Advances in the web processing industry in recent years have made for a proliferation of on line measurement requirements. Web processors often find it impossible to make the measurements required with the sensors available. Often they have to revert to off line laboratory measurements resulting in costly production down time, excessive start up and product change over times, and several hours of potential off specification or scrapped production. Working around the limitations of conventional sensor technology they have to spend hours, days or even weeks conducting tests to deduce the correct operating conditions required to produce a quality product.
Recent advances in on-line sensor technology address some of these measurement needs. A new type of sensor uses Full Spectrum InfraRed (FSIR) technology to make the on-line measurement of coatings, multi-layer film components and other web parameters not previously possible.
