Wet End Chemical Additives
Wet end chemical additives is another engineering discipline where the non-expert is subjected a lot to “smoke and mirrors”. With increasing proportions of recycled fiber and the need to close the water circuit, the need for chemicals increases. Yet the conditions within the mill process keep changing and new chemicals are being developed. This makes it very difficult to keep up with what is the optimum chemical selection, point of injection, dosage etc.
This course is based on what are the most common types of chemicals used. Although the Operator does not need to know the molecular structure of each chemical, he or she does need to have some idea of how it functions. Typically operators should know the difference between Flocculation and Coagulation. These terms are used by Process Engineers and Sales Engineers with whom Operators need to converse. Thanks to computer graphics and animation the mechanisms at molecular level can be visualized clearly.
