Paper Coating Technology
Online Course Description:
This introductory level online course was developed by Alabama Southern Community College under a grant by the National Science Foundation. The course is designed for coating mill production and engineering personnel, mill operators, technical service personnel, product developers, and research & development personnel employed by chemical manufacturers. Course topics include: printing methods for coated grades of paper and board, impact of pigment selection, chemistry and properties of starch and protein binders, materials and equipment. Emphasis is placed on the differences in each process and how these differences affect the properties of the coated base sheet.
All courses were developed by internationally recognized university P&P instructors who have successfully taught the same comprehensive content to thousands of professionals, operators and others at hundreds of mills.

Learning modules are available through TAPPI to Individuals, and as Site/Company Licenses, which allow unlimited training at a site/company; using either Browser access or uploads to a company/mill LMS.
Learning Objectives:
(1) Increased knowledge of printing methods used to print coated grades of paper and board, the coating requirements for these grades, and the methods used to test the print properties of coated papers, (2) Understanding of the chemistry and properties of latex and polyvinyl alcohol binders, the advantages and disadvantages of their use, and the processes used to prepare both binder types (3) Increased knowledge of basic materials within the class of coating additives, including the functional role and general chemical characteristics of each additive, and (4) Understanding of the calculations used to prepare a batch of coating in the lab from a coating recipe.
