Chip Moisture and Density
"Self-guided, blended learning testing labs examining property measurements and variables."
Lab Description:
Moisture Content is an important variable that affects wood/chip deterioration and fungal attack; and the rate of penetration of pulping liquor into chips. The wood property most studied by scientists is “specific gravity”. Mill operations personnel may use a related but different term, the “density”.
Scope and Learning Objectives:
These self guided testing labs and video modules demonstrate the procedures used to test chips, pulping & bleach liquors and pulp. They will also provide some background about the property being tested. The overall learning objective is to increase your understanding of why and how these tests and procedures are performed.
The outline you should follow for each lab is to learn the background information on the property being tested, note the TAPPI standards or
Useful Method (UM 23) that are referenced, then view the video on the correct testing procedure. Sample data is provided. Some of the labs will require calculations and analysis of data, and other labs will provide final data without calculations. A short set of thought questions is included at the end.
