CSF Freeness of Pulp
"Self-guided, blended learning testing labs examining property measurements and variables."
Lab Description:
Freeness, and its opposite term slowness, denotes how fast or slow water drains through a fiber mat. A stock/furnish is free when water drains through the mat rapidly. This has been the most common test performed on pulp/furnish in both mills and laboratories. It has been used to compare pulps, monitor and sometimes control refining, and predict paper and board properties.
Scope and Learning Objectives:
These self guided testing labs and video modules demonstrate the procedures used to test chips, pulping & bleach liquors and pulp. They will also provide some background about the property being tested. The overall learning objective is to increase your understanding of why and how these tests and procedures are performed.
The outline you should follow for each lab is to learn the background information on the property being tested, note the
TAPPI Standard (T227), or Useful Method that are referenced, then view the video on the correct testing procedure. Sample data is provided. Some of the labs will require calculations and analysis of data, and other labs will provide final data without calculations. A short set of thought questions is included at the end.
