Cast Film Lines for Barrier Film, 2003 European PLACE Conference Proceedings
Barrier films are multi-layer film structures produced in huge quantities with the cast film or blown film process.
Barrier films - as the name implies - are films providing a high degree of protection against gases (oxygen,
nitrogen, etc.) as well as good flavour and aroma protection. PA and EVOH polymers are used almost
exclusively for these applications; they can be combined with polyolefins such as PE and PP in the most
different layer configurations to achieve excellent barrier properties against water steam and moisture.
The focus of application is on the packaging of food, pharmaceutical products and chemicals, with the goal to
extend shelf life and improve the hygienic conditions for the handling of the packaged products - a criteria of
growing importance in view of constantly increasing population figures and today’s complex distribution
systems.
