The European flexible packaging industry was mostly using solvent or waterbased lamination technologies to cater
for their production needs. Extrusion coating was somehow considered an unsuitable, high output system, to be left
to papermill industry.
Scope of this paper is to underline the reasons that are bringing back, to European processors, this old converting
technology, with emphasis on the production, environmental and economics advantages.
Three main technical aspects, related to the extrusion section (one of the key technologies incorporated into an
extrusion coating line) shall be covered:
- extruder screw design
- feedblocks and dies
- substrate priming at high speed
