This paper considers the development of Near-Infrared sensor technology with regards to measurement of films and coatings different types).

New developments in Near-Infrared sensor technologies has led to an explosion in their use which has seen a dramatic growth in the market share (by application) of this type of measurement. Much of this growth is down to the development of the hardware and software to enable the measurement of previously difficult and complex materials, whilst changing attitudes and philosophies have also contributed.

This paper aims to assess the different Near-Infrared sensor technologies available today as well as looking at how this measurement principle fits with other sensors technologies.
