Environmental Aspects of Paper-Based Surfaces, 1993 European Plastic Laminates Forum Proceedings

Dr. Eva-Barbara Wiesmann

Many of the ordinary paper products, like printing and writing papers, hygiene or packaging papers, have faced a lot of public eco-pressure. This has forced industry to invest heavily in new technologies which are compatible with the environment. But this is hardly recognized by public. Most paper products are still being perceived as harmful to the environment, with the exception of some special papers.

Niche products, like decorative papers for furniture surfaces, are an example of such special papers. They are hardl yassociated with these problems. Nobody realizes they are paper when finished to their final product. And so far, paper-based surfaces have not felt much eco-pressure from the consumer side.
