Particleboard and Medium Density Fiberboard: Surface Testing Substrates for Laminating Applications, 1993 European Plastic Laminates Forum Proceedings

Michael Hoag

There is a lack of standardized methods to evaluate the surface quality of particleboard and medium density fiberboard substrates for laminating applications. Even tests that are widely used have variations that can affect the result and subsequent evaluation. The objective of this on going project was to identify methods used to evaluate substrate surfaces. Over 15 methods were identified. Five of these, including surface pull; surface roughness; COBB test; surface absorption; and black lacquer draw down, were selected for testing and analysis. This paper reports results of surface pull testing and recommends the development of standardized surface test methods.
