Analytical Characterization of the Standard "Volatile Test" for Melamine Treated Papers, 1995 European Polymers, Laminations and Coatings Proceedings

One of the standard test procedures for controlling the treating process is measuring the volatile content of the treated paper. For Melamine based condensation cure chemistries, this test data is comprised of both the residual solvent water from the resin mix, and the water vapor evolved during the condensation cure. These two components of the volatile data directly relate to the amount of drying and b-staging imparted to the paper during the treating process. The proper utilization of this information should lead to better control of the process as it relates to raw material changes and changes in environmental conditions. Three techniques were used to separate out these two components: 1) TGA, 2) Desiccation, followed by oven bake and, 3) Near Infrared Spectroscopy. The only technique that is viable as an "on-line" test method was the use of Near IR.
