3D FEM Analysis of Fluted Mixers, 2001 European PLC Conference Proceedings

Petra Samsonkova, Josef Simonik, John Perdikoulias--The fluted mixer geometry can be described as a "rheologically" complicated geometry because of the sudden and large changes in the velocity field resulting from the geometry. The sudden restrictions of flow channel directly influence the behavior of the polymer melt over the barrier flight and also the flow characteristics such as viscosity, mixing performance and pressure consumption of the mixer. The performance of this mixer type was calculated by means of a 3D Finite Element Method (FEM) program. Two typical geometries were investigated in order to show how the flow and mixing characteristics are dependent on material properties, process conditions and mixer geometry.
