Recycled Paperboard Technical Association (RPTA) Chemical Testing Protocol for Food-Contact Paperboard Made From Recycled Fiber, Overview and Update, 2003 Fall Technical Conference
The Recycled Paperboard Technical Association (RPTA) sponsored the preparation of a sampling and analysis
protocol that RPTA member mills can use to determine that paperboard produced from recycled fiber may safely be
used in food contact applications and help ensure compliance with the FDA regulations outlined in 21 CFR 176.260.
Allowable concentration values for the potential unintentional chemical constituents in the paperboard have been
calculated, based on migration adjustments. The subjects of this paper include how and why the RPTA Protocol
was developed, how it is used today, and what changes may be expected in the future.
