The Importance of High Final pH in the Oxygen Delignification, 2003 Fall Technical Conference

The final pH of oxygen delignification is found to have a significant impact on the chlorine dioxide-bleachability of pulp, as illustrated using a SW kraft pulp bleached in the sequence D(OP)D. No correlation between the final pH and the chlorine dioxide charge to reach a target brightness is noted for pH:s higher than 10.4. At lower final pH-values the dependence is found to be close to linear. This implies that just by inspecting the kappa number and ISO brightness the chlorine dioxide-bleachability cannot be predicted. A high final pH value of the oxygen delignification is thus desired for a good bleachability of the pulp, whereas a low total alkali charge is beneficial for the viscosity of the pulp. This contradiction can be solved by splitting the alkali charge so that a part of the overall alkali charge is added at the outlet of the oxygen reactor.
