Global Energy Savings and Environmental Effect of New Thermomechanical Pulping Technologies, 2003 Fall Technical Conference

Significant opportunities are available to reduce the energy consumption of thermomechanical pulping. New technologies combining chip pretreatment and high-intensity refining conditions can use upwards of 500 kWh/ton less energy compared to conventional thermomechanical pulping methods. The savings in electrical energy for a 1000 ton/day TMP plant can exceed 6 million USD annually. Significant reductions in environmental emissions are available when reducing the power requirements of thermomechanical pulping. Annual reductions in greenhouse gas emissions can easily exceed 100,000 tons for a modest sized TMP plant using low-energy technologies. Local regulations on air emissions and restrictions on power consumption at pulp and paper mills will continue to influence the design of thermomechanical pulping plants.
