How Does Carbon Dioxide Improve Brownstock Washing?, 2003 Fall Technical Conference

Carbon dioxide is increasingly being used to improve brownstock washing in the kraft pulping sector. There remains some debate, however, as to the mechanism by which this technology reduces soda and organic carryover. Our work shows that, while lower fibre swelling is responsible for some of the washing benefit, reduced air entrainment in pulp is the dominant factor responsible for the improved washing performance with mill pulps and liquors. This observation explains why some mills obtain good results with the addition of carbon dioxide and others do not. If a mill already has minimal air entrainment in its washing operations, or controls it well, the benefits provided by carbon dioxide are going to be marginal. This work also shows that most of the washing benefit provided by adding carbon dioxide to brownstock is an effect of decreased pH, and that any acid should be as effective as carbon dioxide.
