My TAPPI Story: Rory Wolf
TAPPISAFE
The combined effect of xylanase and peracid on brownstock and bleached pulp was investigated. Results from combined treatments of xylanase and peroxymonosulphate or peracetic acid suggest that xylanase is effective in the presence of the oxidative chemicals. We measured an additive effect on the subsequent pulp bleachability using an Elemental Chlorine Free (ECF) sequence. The combination of xylanase and peracetic acid in a Total Chlorine Free (TCF) sequence was not beneficial above that of xylanase alone. Surprisingly, the xylanase treatment of a D1 bleached pulp resulted in a brightness gain of 1.5 units over the untreated pulp; addition of 1kg/t of peracetic acid in the xylanase treatment resulted in a brightness gain of 2.1 units over the untreated sample.
