Risks Associated with Hot-Work Repairs on and Near Yankee Dryers, 2003 Fall Technical Conference

A number of hot-work repair incidents, causing damage to Yankee dryers, have been recorded by TAPPI’s Yankee Dryer Safety Subcommittee. Hot-work repairs are defined as welding, brazing, and oxy-acetylene cutting, or any heating process capable of transforming the standard, pearlitic, gray cast iron microstructure. A Task Group of that Subcommittee was assembled to document those incidents, in order to instruct the industry concerning how such damage can develop, how to recognize, assess, and repair heat-affected cast iron, and how to reduce the potential for those occurrences in the future. Bench tests were performed to demonstrate the metallurgical transformation of gray cast iron subjected to excessive temperatures.
