Energy Reduction at a Kraft Mill: Examining the Effects of Process Integration, Benchmarking, and Water Reduction, 2004 Engineering, Pulping, and PCE&I Conference
Recent volatility and increasing fuel prices has been the catalyst for many mills to undertake studies in order to
examine ways to reduce energy use. Several Canadian kraft mills have reported the results of these studies [1-3].
Issues surrounding energy costs can vary considerably from mill to mill. These issues include fuel availability, selfgeneration
capacity, process energy demand, and seasonal factors. As a result, a single solution is not available to
satisfy every kraft mill’s demand for optimal energy use. However, there are common methodologies that can be
applied to these diverse situations.
