The fundamentals of calendering and nip physics are reviewed and models of the nip mechanics are tested using nip width measurements. A scale-up procedure is then defined based upon our knowledge of the calendering process and the results of the nip model testing. The Hertz equation is shown to be adequate for use in representing the mechanics of the nip and its relative simplicity when compared to other models leads to a straight forward relationship between process scales. It was found that when dwell time and nip pressure are equated between scales, the Hertz equation leads to the web speeds and line forces as being a direct ratio of the Hertz equivalent diameters times the inverse ratio of the material properties of the soft roll in the nip. This technique was verified by soft nip calendering of coated fine papers at two different calendering process scales under a variety of calendering conditions.
