Technical Aspects of Waterjet Slitting, 1990 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings
Waterjet slitting of paper and associated products is replacing knife slitting in many applications in the paper industry. The advantages include cost savings, improved product edge quality, significant reduction in the generation of airborne dust and higher cut-ting speeds. Waterjet-slit edges are cleaner, stronger, more tear resistant and less likely to cause a web break. The difference in the edge quality of corrugated boxboard, for example, is impressive. Tests have shown that the top-to-bottom compressive strength of waterjet-slit corrugated boxboard is better than 20% greater than that of knife-slit boxboard. This difference, especially for multi-wall boxboard, can result in direct cost savings through reduced board consumption. Additionally, increased revenue can be realized through the marketing of stronger, higher quality boxboard products.
