Development of In-House Sheeting, 1990 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

April of 1980 saw the beginning of our in-house precision sheeting operation to support five sheet fed printing presses:

25 x 38 Miehle - 2 Color

28 x 40 Planeta - 6 Color

43% x 60 Harris - 2 Color

43% x 60 Harris - 5 Color

44 x 64 Planeta - 6 Color

In the course of the first year of operation, we realized the ability to reduce our raw material inventory level by nearly 50%. This resulted from our ability to support these five presses with four standard roll widths of 60# ClS litho label paper - 38’/“, 44”, 51” and 56%“. We no longer had to carry twelve stock T4S sheet sizes but rather provide all specific sheet sizes by cutting sheets from these four standard roll widths. This was our first major benefit realized from introducing precision sheeting with a 1979 Model C Lamb Sheeter at a cost of about $300,000. This sheeter is still operating and is 64” wide with a 64” maximum and 22lX” minimum sheet size and a running speed of 600 feet per minute.
