This paper is a technical introduction to the printing and paper industry applications of bar codes and electronic data interchange (EDI) for paper stock tracking and inventory control. It describes the process- used by paper mills to accumulate manufacturing data that is ultimately compiled into paper roll identifiers and the means- by which these identifiers are bar coded and applied to wrapped rolls of paper. In addition to describing the challenges confronting the paper industry in the printing of bar codes, the paper also outlines how data accessed using the bar code is transmitted from paper mills to their customers using EDI. Concluding the document is a description of the systems and approaches employed by one printing company customer, using bar codes and EDI information to enhance plant productivity through greater control over paper receipt, storage, consumption, and performance.
