Cushioned Boxcar Comparison, 1990 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings
Shipping rolled paper products in boxcars is efficient, providing the rolls arrive undamaged. A key to damage is logitudinal forces and the hardware used to control them. A test using a revenue boxcar and real rolls of paper was conducted to evaluate cushioning performance on the lading itself. Controlled tests were run comparing short travel cushion units. Results show that lower impact forces produce lower accelerations on the lading, and that these lower forces are achieved by longer travel cushion units rather than marginally more efficient short travel draft gears.
