In recent years, it seems as if all of the high speed winder manufacturers have reached their maximum winder speeds. There are quite a few of these winders out there. We know also that all winders cannot satisfy all products, therefore, we have different strokes for different folks.
I, for one, am sort of glad that the winder manufacturers are trying to build a better machine, one that may even go faster than today’s winders with even more control over the product so that the operator can fine tune a roll to a customer’s satisfaction. Meanwhile back in the plant or to reality, back to all of these high speed winders, there are other problems which also must be solved, such as getting the paper from the paper machine, newer and faster roll wrapping equipment and handling equipment, cranes, roll storage, trim systems, etc.
One item that is generally not considered when purchasing a new winder is the trim system and the housekeeping equipment required to keep the area around the pulper clean. Generally the pulper housekeeping system is sized for three or four winders, not just one. So as more winders are added in the future, the system should be capable of handling same.
As winder speeds go to 7,500 to 8,000 FPM , a certain volume of air will be required to carry this weight of trim to the pulper. Generally, depending on the grade of paper we would require 3.0 pounds of air per pound of paper. A winder running at 7,500 fpm with 4-inch trim at 33 pounds per 1,000 FPM, both sides, produces 165 pounds of trim per minute. At 3 pounds of air per pound of paper, we would require 495 pounds of air or 6,600 FPM. What happens to all of this air that conveys the trim from the slitter through the system into the pulper?
If a Venturi System is utilized, the manufacturer claims that the trim is continuous and therefore, the trim blows into the pulper in a continuous stream and the air is separated with different filtering devices and screens and the air is deposited back into the plant around the pulper.
