Hot Rolls for Soft Calendering: Meeting the Operator's Needs, 1990 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings
For Soft-Calendering with roll surface temperatures up to 200 degrees C (400 degrees F) peripherally drilled chilled cast-iron rolls are in use since the early eighties. Because of the increasing demand for high heat transfer rolls, the design was thoroughly reviewed recently.
This paper describes the design features of an improved peripherally drilled roll and gives the reasons. It considers a new chilled cast-iron material for high heat transfer, the arrangement of the peripheral passages for the thermal fluid and the connecting channels in the journals. It discusses the internal edge insulations, the increased central bore and the addition of the steel displacer body. It shows, how the limitations of temperature changes when heating up and cooling down have been expanded to 4 degrees C (7 degrees F) per minute.
