Improved Winding System for High Grade Printing and Technical Papers, 1991 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings
The paper industry’s steadily increasing productivity and product quality requirements in the area of roll and sheet stock for printers and converters keep creating new challenges for the makers of slitting and winding equipment. In the process of this there evolved an unmistakable trend toward adapting winding systems to each individual application. This applies with full validity to the field of high grade printing and technical papers produced in roll or in sheet form. Such papers are predominantly free sheet, but occasionally groundwood containing, coated or surface treated, g/m2 in a basis weight range of 20 to 150 g/m2 (13.5# - 100#/3,300 sf). Typical examples may be:
“Heavy weight coated offset (HWC), publication papers, illustration and art printing, label papers, pressure sensitive carbonless papers, color reaction papers, chemically coated papers, silicon papers or decorative papers.”
The printing papers cited here are of high grade because of their surface treatments. New and improved coating and calendering methods are used to obtain the desired level of printability in a wide range of finishes from dull to high gloss. For the converting operation, this means that we are dealing with high density papers (up to 1.35 g/cm3) on the one hand, and with highly sensitive surfaces on the other.
