Embossing Fine Papers, the Evolution from Basement or Back Room to Main-Floor Finishing and Converting, 1992 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

Many products that touch our lives each day have been processed through an embossing machine. Such diverse products as wall coverings, ceiling tile, whiskey labels, cast vinyl release papers, refrigerator door surfaces, tissues, hand towels, placemats, window drapes, ladies blouses, and most significantly, many fine paper grades including Bond, Writing, Text, Cover and Litho Coated Stock, have passed through an embossing calender on the way to the consumer.

While there will be occasional reference to the embossing techniques used on all of these products, our focus will be the machinery and techniques being used to emboss fine papers in 1992.

We will attempt to identify operating parameters that are common to most fine paper grades as well as those that are unique to specific grades or patterns.

Other items that will be discussed include: backing roll construction, types of roll covering materials being used, proven run-in methods for a new filled roll, and how drive technology has contributed to quality and productivity.

Finally, we will peek into the future and describe the embossing machine of 1999.
