Tension Losses During Centerwinding, 1992 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

Centerwinding webs such as paper or film has been historically considered the simplest type of winding due to the absence of nips at the periphery of the winding roll. Several models which predict the stresses in centerwound rolls exist. The radial pressure in wound rolls is one mark of wound roll quality. In a series of centerwinding tests the experimental values of interlayer pressure within the wound roll fell far short of the theoretical values predicted by the models. The experimental pressure profiles (i.e. pressure vs. radius) were typical of centerwinding, but indicated that the web tension was much less than that which was known to exist in the web prior to entering the winder. This paper focuses upon why this tension is lost and upon how wound roll models can be modified such that they can accurately predict the internal stresses within the roll.
