Improved product quality, higher production rates and more recycling of papers continue to receive increasing attention within all segments of the paper industry. The difference between acceptable and unacceptable performance in any of these areas can be directly influenced by the splices and splicing tape used during production of the paper. Many repulpable tapes have been developed to satisfy customer requirements for splice quality, production rates and repulpability. Consideration of the aspects of repulpable tape quality is necessary to obtain all the desired performance benefits from the tape.
There are three critical aspects of quality/performance associated with the use of repulpable tapes. First, the appropriate tape for the task must be selected. Stepwise consideration of the selection criteria will assure that the proper tape is chosen. Next, correct procedures for handling, storage and application of the tape must be executed to insure all the intended performance benefits are obtained from the tape. Additionally, consistent supply of tape from the manufacturer is required to insure quality splices. IS0 registration is an indication that adequate quality systems are used by the tape manufacturer. Other important quality programs for the tape manufacturer can include QFD, SPC, and supplier partnerships.
