Paper Deformation in a Calendering NIP, 1993 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

Jose J. A, Rodal, Ph.D.

The permanent (plastic) deformation produced on a paper web by a calendering (soft) nip is discussed. Numerical (finite-element) calculations of this deformation are presented. Paper is modeled as a porous, cellular, solid material. Stress and deformation results are discussed in relation to theories previously presented in the literature. Emphasis is placed on the relative role of hydrostatic (mean) and shear stresses in producing plastic deformation of the paper web.
