Printer Roll Quality Requirements on Winding Technology, 1994 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

J. J. Lefkowitz, D. F. Boino

The demand from printers for larger rolls both in diameter, and width, has presented several problems for the winding process. To further complicate the problem, more and more recycled fiber is being used, which most often reduces the coefficient of friction of the sheet. This will increase layer to layer slippage and often cause crepe wrinkles and other roll defects, causing procuction losses at the mill and eventually pressroom downtime.

In order to meet printer requirements with consistently high quality rolls, it is first necessary to identify all roll defects that are present in the pressroom today. Only when we completely understand these deficiencies and their causes, will equipment engineers be capable of designing the proper equipment to meet these requirements.
