For years papermakers have considered it normal to throw away some quantity of paper near the spool. With current economic and competitive conditions papermakers are reevaluating this practice and looking for ways to salvage this paper. Larger diameter reel spools may help reduce the paper lost near the spool. This paper will first look at how spools have historically been applied to paper machines and then review some investigation into how spool size may affect the papermaking process, specifically the loss of paper near the spool.
