Producing High Gloss Paper Grades with 4-Nip Soft Calender, 1994 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

The PWA mill in Stockstadt Germany, a small town in northern Bavaria, had a plan to start the production of double-coated matte and glossy fine paper grades. Matte grades have usually been finished with soft/soft nips located on off-machine coaters, while glossy grades have traditionally been produced with 2 or 3 supercalenders.

The machine was provided with control equipment of the Single Window type to easily control all the dynamics of a fast running machine. That also made it possible to utilize all factors increasing the machine’s uptime.
