Finishing Alternative for Offset LWC, 1994 Finishing and Converting Conference Proceedings

The application of hot, soft nip calendering (SNC) is not being used commercially to date for the production of lightweight-coated (LWC) offset grades. One reason is the relatively high speeds run compared to woodfree coated grades that are commercially running on or off line SNC systems. Modern LWC machines are routinely running above 1200 mpm (3937 fpm). Another reason SNC is not accepted yet is the scarce print quality information available for high-speed LWC grades.
A pilot calendering experiment was done in conjunction with a commercial heatset web offset print trial to address the above concerns. This paper reports the results of the study. Pilot SNC is compared to supercalendering on commercially coated LWC. In terms of paper properties and offset print evaluation, SNC is shown a viable alternative to traditional supercalender finishing even at high speeds.
