The present (1989) TAPPI roll number has several shortcomings, as reported by industry associations, paper manufacturers, printers and customers. The principal problem is the number of variations allowed in the present TAPPI roll number guideline. This paper addresses these issues and provides a revised roll number, the new version having a single uniform structure. The content represents input and approval of a combined TAPPI/AF&PA/CPPA/GCA/NPTA/NAA task force.
