Previous ways of looking at the permanent and elastic deformations of fibers in the sheet as they pass through the supercalender nip have been either highly oversimplified or burdened with complicated mathematics In either case, they fall short of producing a comprehensive picture that will help with the understanding of important events on a microscopic scale. One aim of this paper is to keep the presentation focused on a fibrous mat, including the inevitable fiber clumps and void fractions. Another goal is to introduce the concept of flow, the driving forces which cause flow, and the results in terms of sheet compaction, and hopefully surface finishing.
